‘This is Us’ is here and it is making us sniffle into a full box of tissues. The episode is very appropriately captioned – That’ll Be the Day. It takes you to the Day of 90’s, that would be Jack’s (Milo Ventimiglia) last day. The show is receiving accolades from audiences, critics and awards. ‘This is Us’ has grabbed some major awards in the Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice Awards, Naacp Image Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Jack is super excited about the Super Bowl Sunday. All he want is to enjoy 1998 Super bowl on the new entertainment system that he build with his children.
But as the kids often do, they have different plans. Off course they didn’t know this would be their last moments with Jack. The episode shows small but pivotal moments with the kids.
Kate (Hannah Zeile) is working on her audition piece for college submission. The self conscious teen denies Jack’s offer of help and to film her. She doesn’t want to listen his affirmations of how beautiful she is.
Randall (Niles Fitch) ditched the game for a first date. He and his new girlfriend share their first kiss while watching Titanic. The happy ending here is that at least he got to share this news with his father.
Kevin (Logan Shroyer) will carry the worst last memory. As he had a fight with both his parents over college. He dashes all his anger on Jack. Pointing out how he should have been in the Super Bowl and not watching on television. The rebellion kid eventually calls home to apologize to his mother, but not to Jack.
Before the fire breaks out Kate is busy listening to her Berklee audio tape, loud with headphones on. Randall is in his room. Jack leaves a note on Kevin’s door before going to sleep. The Note says,
“Kevin, if I don’t see you before work tomorrow, I love you. You owe us an apology. Dad.”
The fire is due to a Crackpot. Although Jack turns off the Crackpot. But the crackpot’s switch is a little fiddly. A flash back explains that it was given to the couple by a neighbor. Who are also shown at the start of the episode.
The light on the crackpot goes on and off, eventually catching fire. The fire spreads with Family Flashbacks in its background.
For the next episodes you will need more tissues. As it will also touch upon the guilt of the kids individually.
This Is Us usually airs on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. on NBC. But the next episode will air fittingly after the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 4.
