Starring Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Sohail Khan
Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna was billed as a Salman Khan-starrer, but his role could be more accurately described as an extended special appearance. His character, Samir, woos Raina (played by Kareena Kapoor) early in the story, and the opening sequences quickly move through their courtship, marriage, and move to Melbourne, where Samir is a stockbroker. Two years into their relationship, Samir’s career is in trouble, and he takes the advice of a friend (Dino Morea in a cameo) and decides to move temporarily to Singapore to start anew—although it’s never made clear what exactly he’ll be doing in Singapore. Raina agrees to pack their bags and go with him.
At the airport, however, Samir pulls a fast one and hands her a ticket to New Delhi and tells her to stay with his parents there while he goes alone to Singapore. His gesture is a protective one; he doesn’t want to subject her to his struggles, but she’s hurt that he doesn’t want to take her along. After seeing Samir off with a vague promise that she’ll board the plane to New Delhi, Raina sits down and has herself a good, long cry.
Enter Aakash, played by Sohail Khan, Salman’s real-life younger brother and one of the film’s producers. Aakash works in the airport café and falls in love with Raina instantly. His friend and coworker, Harsh (Yash Tonk), convinces Aakash to pursue Raina. She decides to wait for Samir in Melbourne, and she and Aakash become friends.
While Raina makes her marital status clear and doesn’t give Aakash any encouragement, he persists anyway. Things become sticky when Samir returns from Singapore to take Raina back with him and he sees the situation for what it is. He’s not sure about his wife’s fidelity, and several melodramatic situations and poor attempts at comedy follow.
Salman can be a hit-and-miss actor; he can turn in a powerful performance—or not, as in this film. Kapoor doesn’t bring much to her part; anyone could have done it. Sohail puts a great deal of effort into his role, and he isn’t half bad, but the weak script and poor execution drag him down.
Main Aurr Mrs. Khanna is rated Skip.
