Rajinikanth’s Kaala: The gangster drama of the superstar is expected to do huge business at the box office. But before its theatrical release, the film has already earned Rs 230 Crore.
The mega-budget film is produced by Dhanush, Rajnikanth‘s Son in law, Kaala is currently surrounded by some good and bad news. On one hand, the satellite and music rights are sold for a hefty sum. On the other hand, the movie is banned in Karnataka, one of its main business hub.
The movie is made on a budget of Rs 140 Crore and as per a report, it has already earned Rs 230 before its theatrical release via satellite and music right.
For the film to establish itself as a HIT, Kaala requires another 280 Crore in its kitty. Although the backlashcKaala is facing due to Rajinikanth’s controversial comment on Cauvery row could affect its total income.
Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala are the primary target state for Rajinikanth’s Kaala but he also has had a huge fan base in Karnataka, especially in Bengaluru and Kolar, where there is a considerable Tamil population.
But the 67-year-old actor’s comments on the Cauvery issue will cost him around a gross revenue of Rs 15 -20 Crore, that was expected from Karnataka alone. Although Supreme court has rejected the petition that was filed to stall the release of the film in Karnataka. The court has said
“You (the petitioner) want an injunction against the release of the movie. Everybody is waiting for the film to be released.”
The report also suggests that the film might have earned Rs 300 Crore or more before its release if the Karnataka controversy wasn’t involved.
Kaala was till now making the correct buzz. For one it marks the second collaboration between director Pa. Ranjith and actor Rajinikanth after Kabali. Along with that the film also features Huma Qureshi, Nana Patekar, Sampath, Sayaji Shinde and Samuthirakani in pivotal roles. The music of the film is composed by Santhosh Narayanan.

Apart from Tamil, the film will be simultaneously released in Telugu and Hindi dubbed versions on June 7.
