Box Office collection of Badla provides an insight into Box Office collection of many revenge dramas

It’s been 6 days of success at the Box Office for the Amitabh Bachchan and Taapsee Pannu starrer ‘Badla’. The film, made on an estimated budget of Rs 24 crores, has raked in 40 crores before the closing of its first week. Which is being touted as a success, given the rate of expectations. With the weekend coming closer, the numbers may go higher.

In the words of Taran Adarsh, the well-known trade analyst, “Badla refuses to slow down. Maintains a solid grip on Day 6. Admirable trending on weekdays demonstrates the power of solid content…” The question that comes to mind is that despite being an Amitabh Bachchan starrer, are the numbers satisfactory? Given the fact that it is an out and out ‘REVENGE’ film, content is king.

Talking of revenge films, one of the finest classic films that come to mind is ‘Baazigar’ (1993), that collected around Rs 14 crores. Yes, 14 crores, around 26 years ago, in an era of single screen theatres. In the recent times too Bollywood has churned out multiple revenge films. The most memorable of them is ‘Badlapur’ (2015) that grossed around 79 crores at the Box Office. Another revenge film of 2015 was Hate Story 3, which is, so far, the highest grossing films of the Hate Story series. It collected approximately 75 crores at the Box Office.

Baahubali 2 – The Conclusion was all about the son avenging the death of his father

And when it comes to Box Office success of revenge films, the Hindi film industry has had success at many of those, including ‘Baahubali 2- The Conclusion’ in which the son avenges his father’s brutal murder, as well as ‘Kahaani’, in which Vidya Balan sets out for a badla of her husband and son’s demise. Or the Rajinikanth Akshay Kumar flick2.0, wherein an innocent bird saver jetsets takes the vengeance route against the whole city. Here’s a quick look at some of the successful revenge films….

Baahubali 2 (2017) – 1430 crores
2.0 (2018) – 565 crores
Ghajini (2008) – 232 crores
Agneepath (2012) – 193 crores
Kaabil (2017) – 155 crores
Mom (2017) – 37.28 crores
Kahaani (2012) – 104 crores
Hate Story 3 (2015) – 75 crores

‘Sholay’ that released back in 1975, earned 15 crores at the Box Office, which is an equivalent to approximately 900 crores of today’s times! Not to forget the cast earned close to Rs 25 lakhs each for the film!

The numbers are visibly mind-boggling. Looks like we are big on revenge, especially when it comes to family ties. The main protagonist avenging his father or family’s demise (think Sholay or Mom or Agneepath et al), or one person’s ideology against that of the world. Here’s looking forward to more such entertainer flicks.
