Jodhaa Akbar (2008)

Starring Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai

Cultures clash and hearts are won in this lush historical epic about the Mughal Empire and the romance between the Emperor Akbar the Great and his wife Jodhaa. Struggling to prove himself as a ruler and govern according to his principles of religious tolerance, Akbar makes a strategic alliance with a Rajput kingdom by marrying its princess, Jodhaa. Actor Hrithik Roshan is perfectly cast as the idealistic Muslim emperor and he delivers an award-winning performance. Aishwarya Rai plays his enchanting and headstrong Hindu wife. While the marriage was made for political reasons, the couple begins to fall in love and they struggle to find common ground while diplomats and family members try to tear them and the country apart. With the help of Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman’s stirring soundtrack and Kiran Deohans’ stunning cinematography, accomplished director Ashutosh Gowariker has created a film that would win over even the biggest Bollywood skeptic. Despite controversy over the historical accuracy of the plot, the filmmakers have defended its veracity. Either way, it makes for a glorious story.

Jodhaa Akbar is rated Must See.
