It took much more than just a blonde wig for Penelope Cruz to transform into Donatella Versace for her new series. The actress stars in ‘The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story’. The Spanish beauty opened up about what it was like to transform into the Italian fashion icon in The Assassination of Gianni Versace on Tuesday’s episode of Ellen. The Academy Awards winner’s, 43, chat comes just days after the designer expressed her distaste for the new Ryan Murphy series in an interview with Italian press published last week as Cruz plays Donatella Versace in the new crime series.
Cruz speaks about essaying the role of fashion prowess Donatella
Penelope Cruz says she felt a “responsibility” playing Italian fashion designer Donatella Versace in the series “The Assassination of Gianni Versace”.During an appearance, Cruz said:
“You feel much more responsibility (playing a real person). When Ryan called me… I said ‘I need to make (a) phone call and talk to Donatella about this before taking the job”
Cruz, 43, only felt comfortable with the role after speaking to Donatella herself. She further added :
“She told me if somebody was going to do it, she was really happy that it was me because I think she knows what I feel for her and Gianni. They’re the most kind people. It’s important to me that when she sees what I’ve done she can feel the love and respect that I have put there (and) how I feel for her.”
At Ellen’s Burbank, California studio Penelope donned a glittering velvet jacket with angular shoulder pads paired with dark pants and studded, over-the-knee boots. As Cruz plays Donatella Versace in The Assassination of Gianni Versace, for this the star went blonde to play the Italian design queen and she was back to her natural color, pinning her hair back neatly for the interview.During her chat Penelope, who has been married to actor Javier Bardem since 2010, opened up about the challenges of playing someone who’s such a big icon IRL.
Cruz on Donatella’s kind gesture
Cruz explained how Donatella returned the love by sending her a bouquet of flowers ahead of the Golden Globe Awards ceremony.Though Penelope appeared to have earned the blonde’s respect, Versace wasn’t so quick to give the FX series her seal of approval.
The Spanish actress had to work with a dialect coach to get the Italian accent right. Speaking to a leading fashion magazine, Penelope said
“I worked a lot with a dialogue coach to find the way that Donatella speaks, which is a little different from the way she spoke in the nineties. The accent that she has, it’s Italian with a very international flavour – very rock n roll. I didn’t want to do an imitation of Donatella or a caricature. I wanted to try to capture the essence of who she is.”
The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story premiered Wednesday, January 17 on FX.
