RANCE HOWARD, FATHER OF RON HOWARD PASSES AWAY AT 89 Veteran movie and television actor Rance Howard, the father of director and acto r Ron Howard, has passed away. A tweet from Ron Howard’s verified account on Saturday confirmed the news.

Ron Howard’s tweet read as: “Clint & I have been blessed to be Rance Howard’s sons. Today he passed at 89. He stood especially tall 4 his ability to balance ambition w/great personal integrity. A depression-era farm boy, his passion for acting changed the course of our family history. We love & miss U Dad.”

There was no immediate information revealed about the cause of the death. Rance Howard was 89 years old. 

Howard was born Harold Rance Beckenholdt in Duncan, Oklahoma. He was born to Ethel Cleo and Engel Beckenholdt. He altered his name to “Rance Howard” when he became an actor. Howard went to the University of Oklahoma.

He acted in a touring children’s theater as a teenager and, as an adult, traveled with Henry Fonda in the stage performance of “Mister Roberts”.

He traveled to New York and was given a role with elder son Ron Howard in “The Journey,”. He quickly obtained work in television and got roles in series like “Bat Masterson,” “Gunsmoke” and “The Waltons.” He did a natural performance on “Gentle Ben,” accompanying Clint Howard, his younger son.

Rance Howard had acted in diverse films, beginning from “Frontier Woman” in 1956 and concluding, four years ago with “Nebraska” in 2013. Six of his movies were nominated for best-picture Oscars: “The Music Man,” “Chinatown,” “Apollo 13,” “A Beautiful Mind,” “Frost/Nixon” and “Nebraska”.

In the Ron Howard directed-movie, “A Beautiful Mind” which won the Best Picture Oscar in 2001, Rance Howard was seen playing a small role of  “white-haired patient,” IMDb said.

Rance Howard elder son, Ron Howard, who appeared as Opie Taylor as a kid on TV’s “The Andy Griffith Show,” became a famous movie director later. Accompanying with “A Beautiful Mind,” Ron Howard presented his father characters in several of his films, like “Splash,” “Cocoon,” “The Paper,” “Apollo 13,” “Frost/Nixon” and “Angels and Demons.”

Many well-known faces shared their sadness about his death on social media.

The lead actor of the movie,” A Beautiful Mind” Russell Crowe posted on Twitter: “Hey @RealRonHoward my deepest condolences. He was a fine man indeed was Rance Howard. Fine man, fine actor. Being in his company was always a pleasure.”

Comedian and actor Josh Gad also wrote on Twitter saying: “Today we lost one of the greats: #RanceHoward, who I was proud to call a personal friend. When I first arrived in LA, he opened his home to me & made me feel like family. He was a legend, both as a person & performer. @BryceDHoward & @RealRonHoward sending lots of love.”
