Indian actress Tisca Chopra believes that Bollywood stars are yet to make a mark in the West or Hollywood. Opposite to the perception that Indians are making their presence felt in Hollywood, the ‘Taare Zameen Par’ star says “we have not yet begun in the West”. The 43-year-old actor says that only two Indian artistes have managed to consistently make their presence felt in Hollywood. These are Priyanka Chopra and Irrfan Khan. Priyanka made the headlines with her film Baywatch and Irrfan has already starred in many mega budget Hollywood flicks. Besides them Tisca says that no other star from India has made any significant impact in Hollywood.
In a recent interview with a tabloid, Tisca expressed her views on this. The actress says that India is a huge country with ample talent and potential. One or two Indian faces showing up in Hollywood aren’t going to make much of a difference. Usually Indians are cast when there is a requirement of any Asian face. The actress says that India is a huge market for Hollywood film which often does very good. But if you talk about Hollywood filmmakers getting attracted to Indian content, this is simply not the case. Indian films are yet to make a market for themselves. Contrary to this Chinese, Korean, Iranian and Turkish films have already created a good following for themselves in the West.
Indian produces over 700 films each year and not even one or two make it big on the world stage. Indian films hardly begin in the West. Though films may earn good but they are hardly appealing to the west when we talk about content richness. The only thing west is attracted to in India is the vast population and the subsequent huge market in India. Tisca gave the interview while working on her latest project, The Hungry. This is a contemporary retelling of Shakespearian tragedy Titus Andronicus. The movie follows a widow and a bride to be on their journey of revenge. The Hungry is set to premiere at the ongoing Toronto Film Festival tomorrow and Tisca is all but excited about taking the film to such a prestigious and popular global platform.
The actress is feeling fabulous about taking her film to the Toronto International Film Festival. She was all praises for the cast and crew of the film for putting in a great team effort. Though the film was a tight-shot project but it has a lot of heart to it. Tisca plays the role of ‘Tulsi’, a character that has shades of early lady Macbeth. Director of the film Bornila Chatterjee wanted to have an earlier version of the character which is dark, compelling and one of the most challenging roles of Tisca’s career. Naseeruddin Shah also plays an important role in the film and takes the story to a whole new dimension.
Tisca has done many workshops with Naseer and shares quite a bond with him. The actress says working with Naseer brings out the best in everyone.
